Chris Coleman

Richard Harvey - Managing Director and Head Brewer

Regarded by many in the trade as “Brewing Royalty” Richard Harvey joined CAMRA in the early 1970’s whilst at Swansea University. He also found time to graduate with a degree in Chemical Engineering.

His first ‘proper job’ was at Bass, where he spent 7 years learning the art of brewing, enjoying many production roles and gaining his Diploma of the Institute of Brewing (now Master Brewer) qualification.

He was tempted south to Gibbs Mew plc in Salisbury in 1982, to become Head Brewer. He held this position until closure in 1998, following the Chairman’s death. During Richard’s 16 years at Gibbs several beers, especially “The Bishop’s Tipple”, won many awards.

Richard was then appointed Managing Director of Hop Back Brewery plc, where the business grew steadily and profitably during his 7-year tenure. More recently he became General Manager at Hampshire Brewery, where he was able to indulge in creating more new beers such as “Pink Elephant”, a beer where grape and grain were fermented together!

Richard’s other passions (i.e. other than beer!) are sailing, bridge and campanology.

Anthony Goddard persuaded Richard to become a trainee “caulkhead” (i.e.: what you are on the Isle of Wight until you’ve lived there for three generations) and join Goddard’s brewery on the Isle of Wight as Head Brewer. Richard commented, “I am very pleased to be joining Goddard’s Brewery. I have regularly enjoyed drinking their excellent beers when visiting the island, which I have done frequently over many years. It is now my mission to ensure these beers remain consistently excellent and become more widely available for good beer connoisseurs to enjoy.”

Nigel EldridgeNigel Eldridge - Assistant Brewer

Closet musician and general all-round brewery good egg, with the ability and aptitude to fly solo in Richard's absence (holidays, tooth-ache, being run over by a bus, etc.) which helps ensure consistency and continuity in the production of our rather good beers. Our photo shows him in a calmer moment.

Anthony Goddard - Where the Buck Stops*

Anthony Goddard

One of the more bizarre sights on the motor-racing circuits of northern Europe is a 16-stone sixty-something individual who ought to know better. Unlikely to worry Lewis Hamilton as his racing motto is 'after you, Claude'.

*only if nobody else can be blamed

Babs MitchellBabs Mitchell - Associate Director, Admin

Goddards Brewery's answer to Elizabeth Taylor, Babs puts up with a quite astonishing amount of political incorrectness (thank goodness). If you are on the receiving end of our telesales system, then it's more than likely that it is Babs who contacts you. Can turn into a Rotweiler on demand if you don't pay your bills on time. Be warned.

Andrew YoungAndrew Young - Associate Director, Sales

Andrew is a fugitive from Carlsberg and now safely settled into the bosom of Goddards Brewery. Wine buff, bon viveur - what more can one say about Andrew? Quite a lot really - very good at promoting the cause without you feeling that you are being sold to. Popular, and easy to see why when you meet him.

Ian, Matt and PaulSimon Courtley - Representative

The Isle of Wight’s Goddards Brewery is now sixteen years old, but has been selling its beers on “the other island” only for the last two-and-a-bit years. It had become obvious that Sales Director Andrew Young was spread very thinly over the territory we now supply (in an arc from Brighton to Newbury to Poole in the west, plus the Isle of Wight, of course). We were therefore very lucky to be able to take on Simon Courtley to look after the western half of the mainland.

Simon spent ten years working “the other side of the bar” so has a good idea of the trials and tribulations of running a pub or licensed premises. Starting as a barman, he has worked as a relief manager and then resident manager for Laurel Pub Company. He’s also spent two years working for Ringwood Brewery, then a spell with Hampshire Brewery - a really good grounding in our trade.

Revelling in his new job, he likes the odd pint (or two) - and plays golf very badly (he says).

Paul and Ian

Paul Bradshaw and Ian Mouat do all of the important work, whilst those above wander about in white coats or suits and ties. Same in most organisations, we assume...
